Have ¡Èdecluttering days¡É
And that¡Çs where setting out a day or two in a year for cleaning can be good for the soul of your house. By setting these days out in advance and even going to the extent of marking them on the calendar, you get yourself motivated to do something. In my case unfortunately it was more along the lines of forcing myself to do something, because let¡Çs face it, if I was a cleaning oriented person, I wouldn¡Çt need to mark the day down on the calendar, I would know it by heart. In fact I this case, I would be doing it on a daily basis! Marking it on the calendar however, can be a great motivator, especially if you know that your mother will be coming over the next day! Sorry Mom, I have to say that¡Çs what I did. I disregarded everything else and waited until the very last day before you came over at which point I went into a frenzy of cleaning and managed to get things looking passably shipshape. Naturally it was in achieving this gargantuan feat that I managed to create the TARDIS! Of course by the time I was finished I was exhausted and ready to fall where I stood, but ultimately everyone was happy all around. My mother for being able to come and see what a (semi) neat and clean child she had raised, and my father for not having to listen to one more cleaning lecture aimed at everyone in general. Me, mainly because I was basking in the glory of having managed to pull off a small miracle, and the squirrels because I was providing them with their own personal nest. However, that said, after I finally got myself organized it was only a hop, skip and jump to make this annual cleaning thing into bi-annual cleaning thing which wasn¡Çt such a chore after all. Spring Set one day aside for spring cleaning because it¡Çs always nice to be able to throw open the doors and let the fresh spring air come in after a long cold winter. This is when you need to put your decluttering tips and tricks to best use and when you will ultimately get most of the work done. If you have a large house, organize your day accordingly. There are only a limited number of hours in the day and you won¡Çt be able to use all of them to do your cleaning, so put the ones that you have at your disposal to good use. Spring cleaning need not necessarily be about cleaning the entire house even. It could just be a really good excuse to turn the whole house upside down and to air everything. And if that doesn¡Çt appeal to you, instead of going through the entire house turning it one its head, you could just set yourself to tackle the rooms which get the least amount of cleaning at any given time. So you might want to think about turfing out that family of squirrels that have made your antique bureau their home and cleaning out the ever unused and fully cluttered guest bedroom. You can make your spring cleaning day an annual jaunt so that you can tackle the things you let slide over the year on this day. You know that it will come around and you know that you will motivate yourself to get something done, even if it is only to air things out. In my case ¡Èairing¡É things out usually led to a greater mess, but at least I made sure that there were no unwanted guests and that everything became aired. Except for the TARDIS of course, that was the one constant in my life and the squirrels, darn their nesting hides, knew this. This of course accounts for the number of different nests and such that I found as well as the number of different unusable items in the room after their nesting efforts! Having said that, I firmly stick by the idea that if you haven¡Çt used it in heaven knows how long and you had even forgotten about its very existence until you came across it again in your decluttering efforts, then you really don¡Çt need it now. Autumn I don¡Çt actually use this particular day to clean, but I do use it as an excuse to go through everything that I possibly can and throw out unwanted clutter which has piled up on me over the months. And for those of you who believe this to be cleaning, don¡Çt be fooled. I do no such thing. In reality I go through whatever piles of clutter have accumulated through the past months and throw whatever I have no need for, what I have forgotten the existence of, and whatever is lying in a broken and mangled heap. Autumn cleaning, as opposed to Spring cleaning, is a time when you burrow down into your home and not have to worry about going outside until you¡Çve managed to unearth your winter clothes. It¡Çs also fun because you get to throw things, and once you first throw off the shackles of attachment you have to your junk, you will find that it becomes easier to differentiate between junk and the good stuff. |
