    Planning for Your Deck Design

The first step though in building your deck – is planning for its design. This is where it all starts. Having that clear picture of how you want your deck to look like will be important, so that you will be to realize it - as you want it to be.

    Deck Aesthetics

Although you will have the say on how your deck will take shape – you should first and foremost know what the building codes and zoning laws are in your area. These codes and laws will be your reference in coming up with a design for your deck – all within the bounds that are allowed by the guidelines set.

Different localities will have different laws, thus it is necessary that you do your research. You should always abide by what are set in the guidelines. In the end, you will have to follow these – following now will get you through your project faster.

Now that you know the guidelines in your locality, you can plan for the details.

    Size and Height of Deck

You should consider the appropriate proportion of your deck and house in determining the right size for it. A small deck on a big house, or a big deck on a small house will not be visually fitting. It will not look good and may just become an awkward site to look at.

You should also consider the appropriate height for your deck. And another consideration would be the size of your yard – this may also limit the size for your deck. Yet you should be very careful in the first place not to make the deck too small – get it to the right size.

You don”Ēt want to redo your deck just because you planned its size incorrectly. You should do it right the very first time – and free yourself from regrets and the hassle in the future.

    Deck Shape

On how you like your deck to take shape, depends on your personal preferences. There could be an angled corner or however you may like it. A 45-degree decking pattern may be to your liking as well. Also, you can do a deck that is multi-leveled.

Putting fences, screens, benches and tables can be done creatively to add beauty and function to your deck. The combination of all these will provide for a deck design that is worthy of appreciation.

    Deck Cutouts

This can be done when accommodating trees or rocks within the deck area. With trees, you should allow some space along the sides to allow for future growth. You may also consider putting a bench around the tree – making it one unique set-up.

A hot tub can also be placed if the deck is reinforced – or the tub can be made to set directly on the ground with the deck built around it. You may want to get the help of professionals for this job. You want to be sure you are able to support the additional load with such plan.

    Deck Stairs

Steps and stairs are usually set to 36Ӄ to 48Ӄ wide. Depending on whether you want a comfortable two-way path, you should aim for a wider space. Refer to the building code in your locality to check how you should go about attaching stairs.

    Deck Railings

Railings provide added beauty to the overall look of your deck. With just the right imagination put into it, yours will be one that will catch attention and become a sight to behold.

Deck railings are governed by building code regulations. Materials that can be used here include wood, metal and even rope – as long as it meets structural requirements.

    Deck Functionality

You should ask yourself what your deck would be made to function. Your consideration should include whether you will use it for dining, hosting parties, entertaining, children”Ēs activities, outdoor living space, surround your hot tub or swimming pole and many more.

You should check whether you plan to use it for a large group or just smaller ones. The kind of seating arrangement and lighting should also be a factor during your planning.

With all this information, you can come up with an idea on how to come up with a design that will meet most of your requirements as much as possible.

    Deck Location

In determining the location of your deck, you should consider the views outside you want to see when you are on the structure. You will also be limited however to the orientation of your house and property. If you use your creativity however, there will be ways you can work around the limitations.

In deciding the location of your deck, you will have to consider the climate in your area. The north-side deck will provide for the cooler location while a southern-side deck will provide for a warmer one.

Depending on your preferences, you may also want to consider a location where you can have some privacy. This is especially important if you plan to have a swimming pool or a bathtub with your deck. Strategically locating your deck will also help in minimizing some traffic noise and making sure you get the best views out there.

    Deck Materials

You should purchase deck materials that can withstand weather changes of your area. Your decks will be subjected to extreme weather conditions on certain parts of the year, thus the need for materials that are able to bear these. Resistance to termites and decay are also important characteristics of your deck materials.

Standard lumbers used in construction as pine or spruce can be treated against decay, yet these would not be able to withstand the ultraviolet rays of the sun – or any other extreme weather condition.

A better alternative for your deck materials are pressure-treated redwood and cedar. Redwood and cedar materials are durable, soft - and have fine grains. They are better materials that can resist splintering. These are less costly and can be made to take on any color of your liking.
